Background Tasks and Services

Outside programs or services can also cause crashing or freezing issues in one of a few ways. If there are too many processes that are exceeding what the RAM can handle, then your computer might crash out the program. There are a few ways you can disable background tasks to alleviate this issue.

The best way is to use a utility called MS Config. Follow the steps below to go through disabling background tasks and services using MS Config.

Click on “Properties” on the menu that appears, and this will open the “System Properties” (Windows XP) or “System” (Windows Vista and 7) window. To give an example of what size to set the paging file to, you will want to set its Initial size to 3 GB (3072 MB) if your system's total memory is 2 GB, and its Maximum size to 4 GB (4096 MB).

Lowering In-Game Video Settings

Many crashing issues can stem from your PC not being able to handle the stress of running the game at a specific setting. The weak link can be your video card, processor, memory or even your power supply. But lowering the video settings will help put less strain on your system and often times alleviate crashing issues. Within the game you will have options for modifying your video quality settings, you can try putting these settings at the minimum level or just a level lower than you currently have it set.

Try playing the game like this for a while to see if the problem continues to occur. If the problem no longer occurs, you can try slowly increasing the quality in the options and test each setting to find the best balance of video quality with no crashing issues.

Reinstalling the Game

Patches and hotfixes can become corrupted and could cause crashing. You will need to reinstall the game for a fresh start to fix issues caused by this. Follow the steps below to reinstall your client:

NOTE: In Windows XP click start and Add or Remove Programs. For Windows 7 it's Uninstall a program, located in your control panel.

  1. Find the game in the list of installed programs that comes up and click uninstall.
  2. Once it is removed from here, go through your program files and make sure you have deleted any associated files or folders.
  3. You can install the game again.
